Sourcing:
Gone are the days where organizations can just post a job requirement with advanced skills and wait for high quality resumes to roll in their inboxes. In the current scenario where there are far more jobs available when compared to the qualified candidates, Sourcing has a greater role to play with the global talent shortage across varied industries. So now the question pops up, how do organizations hire the right talent amidst stiff competition and huge demand. Companies enable talent acquisition strategies that include sourcing – the act of searching, researching, recruiting and engaging both active and passive candidates who are yet to apply for a job.
The dynamics in the recruiting business is ever evolving as social media has changed the way talent is acquired and identified. An essential part of the recruiting cycle is that there is a clear and growing need for organizations to source qualified candidates. Having a dedicated sourcing team has become a norm for every organization. A few ways of how sourcing work is –
- Recruiters will source candidates.
- Recruiters will hire independent sourcing candidates to work for them and fill vacancies.
- Companies can create designated sourcing candidates and sourcing teams.
There are cases were a candidate will both source and recruit. In larger organizations, they have in-house recruiters who do nothing but sourcing. In few instances, organizations will hire consultants to source for their hiring managers and sometimes a recruiting agency hires sourcing candidates. All these scenarios are quite common in sourcing. More specifically, sourcing involves finding eligible candidates that organizations want, the eligible candidates who are not easy to find.
Some of the various techniques used by the sourcing individuals to find the right candidates are:
- Boolean Sourcing – They use Boolean operators on social media sites and search engines to find potential resources through targeted keywords
- Database Sourcing – Leveraging an organization’s existing database of potential prospects.
- Board Sourcing – Using keywords or search operators and scan job boards.
- Network Sourcing – Uncover potential candidates using online and offline network connections such as LinkedIn etc.
- Mobile Sourcing – Usually done over text chats such as SMS, Whatsapp or messenger to engage potential candidates.
- Phone Sourcing – Contacting potential resources by phone or through cold calling.
In anticipation of the required positions, sourcing for potential resources is best started ahead of time. They are already at a disadvantage if they begin searching candidates when they need them. However, in real-time, they don’t prepare that way for various reason and hence sourcing becomes very valuable to hiring managers and recruiters.
The fundamentals of a good sourcing are to know your people, use the right tools for the job and make recruiting a team sport.
